BEACH © Karyn Ellis

I will wander down to the beach
With a pocket full of wooden matches.
I will burn driftwood and two-by-fours.
I will write your name with a stick in the sand
And the tide will wash it away again.

I will sketch for you
These fanciful flowers.
I will write my name on your back for hours.
Then draw the schedule for the train.
For I feel the pull, should I leave?
Or stay trapped in your tower.

Picking up glass worn down by the tide.
Seagulls circling the luminous sky.
And I will wear my fine summer smile
On a windless night.
I will spend the dawn mourning starlight.

And on the beach
They shot homemade fireworks.
Rising globes of pink and green light
Like bubbles rise in champagne.
And I will forgive myself for falling.
